Если круглосуточно объединёнными усилиями не могут найти большой самолёт, на борту которого были 97 человек, можно предложить начальникам поисковых работ ещё одну версию, для них может быть удобную, но абсолютно невероятную и инопланетную. Увы, действительность гораздо прозаичней сообщают наши дальневосточные корреспонденты. |

If round-the-clock combined efforts cannot find the large airplane that had 97 people on board, we might suggest one more possibility to the people in charge of search operations, which might be convenient for them, albeit absolutely unbelievable: an extraterrestrial possibility. Alas, our Far East correspondents report that reality is far more prosaic. |

Трудно наверстать числом время упущенное в первые сутки. Только 30 часов спустя, правительственная комиссия в Хабаровске установила единоначалие над операцией и повернула силы поиска в море. Ведь последняя связь с пропавшем бортом была как раз над серединой Татарского пролива. |

It is difficult to make up the time that was lost on the first day. It took a government commission thirty hours to designate a single person to head the operations and to concentrate its efforts on a sea search. The last contact with the missing airplane occurred just over the middle of the Tatar Strait. |

This is probably not idle time. Even LaPerouse mistook the Tatar Strait for a river because of the strong current. And it's not any easier on land. The terrain is mountainous taiga. |

В свои последние девять минут авиолайнер был вне видимости земли. Радиолокатор вблизи советской гавани, контролирующий пространство над проливом, разрушен прошлогодним тайфуном и не установлен из-за отсутствия средств. С каждым часом всё меньше и меньше верится в чудеса. |

During its last nine minutes the airplane was not visible from the ground. The radar located near Sovetskaya Gavan', which controlled the airspace over the strait, was destroyed by a typhoon last year and has not been re-installed due to a lack of funds. With every hour one believes less and less in miracles. |
