A full ban on British beef imports to Europe -- this is the question that European Union experts are discussing in Brussels. Twenty-three countries in the world have already prohibited the importation of meat from Britain after the sensational announcement from London concerning a possible link between mad cows and an incurable illness of the human brain. |

Strictly speaking, the English brown cows are not guilty in this matter. It is the farmers who have fattened them up with hormone-laden feed that causes an accelerated growth rate in the animals. In the coming years nearly half the population of Great Britain may be affected as a result of eating infected beef, said Professor Leslie, the country's leading microbiologist. |

As is known, shipments of British beef to the former Soviet Union ceased 7 years ago. But this doesn't make things any better. Cases of mad cow disease have been noted in Switzerland, Ireland, France, Germany, and other countries of the world. |
