Ну похоже, что проблемы Европейского союза вполне могут стать проблемами российских потребителей. Заинтересованные федеральные ведомства по-прежнему не могут дать однозначного ответа на волнующий всех вопрос. |

It appears that European Community problems can also become problems for Russian consumers. As usual, the concerned federal departments cannot give a definitive answer to the question that is troubling everyone. |

Вопрос стоит так: "Ели или нет мясо бешеных коров россияне?" Губчатый энцефалит, который ещё называют коровим бешенством,1 свирепствует в Англии. Как говорят учёные, болезнь может передаваться человеку. Поэтому уже 7 лет в России запрещена английская говядина. Однако, недавно комиссия Европейского совета предположила, что две бельгийских фeрмы, поставив свои клейма на английское мясо, провезли его через Голландию в Россию. Случилось это весной. |

The question is this: "Have Russians eaten any meat contaminated by mad cow disease?" Spongiform encephalitis, which they still call mad cow disease,1 is raging in England. Scientists say the illness can be transmitted to humans. Therefore, British beef has already been banned in Russia for 7 years. However, a European Community committee recently conjectured that English meat had been transported through Holland into Russia after two Belgian fаrms had affixed their stamp on it. This happened in the spring. |

Thus, more than 500 tons of this meat have appeared in Moscow, St. Petersburg and possibly other Russian cities. The largest portion, 230 tons, wound up at the Cherkizovsky Meatpacking Plant. |

-- Ну 230 тонн, мы перерабатываем 450 тонн в сутки. Ну вы представляете вот 10,000 тонн проходит мясо в месяц. Да это вот муха пролетела, так сказать, и практически этого мяса нет. И "слава Богу," вот мои говорят о том, что это, этот объём был переработан на полуфабрикат там. Но я имею в виду фарш там, там ещё какие-то моменты там, натуральные полуфабрикаты, нарезанные это самое шашлыки, ещё что. Ну вот такая схема. |

"Well, 230 tons...we process 450 tons a day... Imagine, 10,000 tons of meat are processed here a month. So it's like a fly goes by and the meat is gone, for all practical purposes. And my people say "Thank God!" because this meat was processed into partially prepared food products. What I mean is ground beef and some other things - natural, partially prepared food, cut up for kebabs, and so on. That sort of thing. |

Короче мясо было подготовлено к продаже и продано ещё 3 месяца назад. (Cuts out) в конвейер не только Черкизовского, но и многих других мясокомбинатов, куда поступали менее крупные партии. Скорее всего 3 месяца назад мясо съели. |

In short, the meat had already been prepared for sale and sold 3 months ago. (Cuts Out) on the conveyor is not only from the Cherkizovsky Plant, but also other meat-packing plants, where smaller portions wound up. Most likely, the meat was eaten 3 months ago. |

Representatives of the veterinary service were here. The army was here. They simply cleaned out the entire refrigerator, and (B% to this day, so to speak), fears (B% have circulated concerning) the availability of meat. "There's no high-quality meat here." |

И так вернёмся к вопросу "Ели или нет россияне мясо бешеных коров?" Во-первых точно не установлено, что контрбанада была из Англии. Во-вторых почти невероятно, что говядина была заражённой, так как британские фермеры уничтожют всё поголове своего хозяйства, если какая-нибудь из бурёнок заболеет. В-третьих, медики утверждают, что для человека опасно не мясо, а внутренние органы болеющих животных. Упомянутых субпродуктов в бельгийск ой партии не было. И наконец, мясо прошло терми ческую обработку на заводе. |

And so we return to the question "Have Russians eaten meat infected by mad cow disease?" First, we can't precisely determine that the contraband came from Britain. Second, it's very unlikely that the meat had been infected, since British farmers destroy every head of cattle, if one of their livestock gets sick. Third, physicians have confirmed that it isn't the meat, but the internal organs of the sick animals that poses a danger to humans. There were no such byproducts in the Belgian shipment. And finally, the meat had undergone heat treatment at the factory. |

The people in Britain didn't stop eating this meat. European Community countries had continued consuming this meat until 1996. And there were not any reports of widespread human illness in this country. |

It appears that our fellow citizens have, nevertheless, become more cautious about beef from stores. |

А в Министерсте сельского хозяство нам всё-таки порекомендовали есть отечественную говядину. И безопасно и патриотично. |

The Ministry of Agriculture has, nevertheless, recommended that we eat domestic beef. It's both safe and patriotic. |
