Сегодняшний день принёс сенсацию, пожалуй, исторического масштаба для нашей страны. Президент Российской Федерации объявил о предстоящей денежной реформе, именуемой "деноминация рубля." Если до 1-ого января 1998 года в вашем кошелке лежало 100,000 рублей, то после нового года в ваших кошелках будет 100 рублей. Таким образом Центробанк Российской Федерации освобождает нас от трёх нулей. Но начинаем мы нашу программу с заявления Бориса Ельцина. |

Today brought sensational news, perhaps of historical significance for our country. The president of Russia announced an upcoming monetary reform called the "redenomination of the ruble." If you have 100,000 rubles in your wallet before January 1, 1998, you'll only have 100 rubles after the New Year begins. This is because the Central Bank of Russia is liberating us from three zeros. But let's begin our program with Boris Yeltsin's announcement. |

-- При введении в обращение новых денежных знаков, мы намерены избежать стрессов и потрясений. Не будет никакого обмена старых денег на новые, тем более обмена, как говорят, в три дня. Новые монеты и банкноты Банка России войдут в обращение с 1-ого января 1998 года. Но в течение всего 98-ого года будет разрешено хождение старых и новых купюр. И старые и новые купюры будут обязательны к приёму всеми банками, предприятиями, магазинами. |

"We intend to avoid stress and shock when the new bills are put into circulation. There will be no exchange of old money for new, much less an exchange, let's say, in just three days. The new Bank of Russia currency will be put into circulation beginning January 1, 1998. Circulation of both old and new denominations will be allowed throughout all of 1998. All banks, businesses and stores will be required to accept both the old and new notes. |

К 1-ому января 1999 года, мы изымем [старые купюры]1 из обращения. Но ещё в течение четырёх лет до конца 2002 года, они будут приниматься для обмена всеми учреждениями Банка России. |

By January 1, 1999, we will start withdrawing [the old banknotes]1 from circulation. But the money will continue to be accepted by all branches of the Bank of Russia for four more years until the end of 2002." |

-- Деноминация рубля, изменения масштаба цен безусловно упростят жизнь людей. Разменной монетой станет не 1,000 а рубль. Без лишних нулей будет легче, привычнее делать расчёты. Кроме того в результате реформы никто ничего не потеряет. Не будут ущемлены ничьи интересы. Эта реформа не будет конфискацией. Неслучайно объявлено о намеченной реформе заранее. Хочу, чтобы все к ней хорошо подготовились, чтобы не было никакой спешки и никаких волнений. |

"The ruble redenomination, corrections in the scale of prices, will no doubt simplify people's lives. The unit of monetary exchange will be one ruble instead of 1,000 rubles. It will be easier, simpler to make calculations without these superfluous zeros. Besides, no one will lose anything as a result of the reform. No one's interests will be infringed upon. This reform will not result in money being confiscated. The early announcement of this planned reform is intentional. I want everyone to be well prepared for the reform, so there won't be any panic or anxiety." |

В результате денежной реформы, проведённой 100 лет назад, у России появился полновесный золотой рубль. Накануне Первой мировой войны он был самой твёрдой, самой надёжной валютой в Европе. Let's recall Russia's history. The full-weight standard gold ruble appeared as a result of monetary reform carried out in Russia 100 years ago. I believe that the day is near when our Russian ruble will once again be respected by the world in this same way." |
