Перед самым восходом солнца, когда Владивосток ещё светится ночными огнями, на льды Тихового океана выходят тысячи человек. Так начинается день у приморских рыбаков. По льду идут несколько километров. Вдали от берега вода чище. У каждого за спиной большой короб, чтобы складывать улов.

Well before sunrise, as Vladivostok still glistens with night lights, thousands of people walk out on to the ice of the Pacific Ocean. This is how the Primorye fishermen's day begins. They walk several kilometers out onto the ice. The water is cleaner away from the shore. Each has a large container on his back to store the catch.

Даже самые сильные морозы и ветра не в силах остановить этих людей. Для них рыбалка почти главное удовольствие в жизни. Для других единственный способ прожить. Над океанскими просторами сильнейшие ветра, поэтому рыбаки поверх меховых шуб надевают что-нибудь непробиваемое. Только укутавшись можно выдержать 8-10 часов в плену ледяной стихии и рыбацкого азарта.

Even the most bitter cold and wind aren't powerful enough to stop these people. For them, fishing is practically life's greatest pleasure. For the others, it's the sole means of survival. The winds are strongest over the open sea spaces, therefore the fishermen wear something impenetrable over their fur coats. Only by snugly wrapping themselves up can they hold out for 8-10 hours, held captive by the frigid elements and fish fever.

За таким процессом рыбаки проводят весь день, с самого рассвета до заката. Удочки необходимо постоянно поддёргивать, чтобы рыба могла заметить приманку в воде. Кстати, глубина здесь 15 метров и рыбы обитают на самом дне, но настоящему рыбаку нужно лишь несколько секунд для того, чтобы вытащить улов из лунки и не запутaться в длинной леске.

This is how the fishermen spend the entire day, from sunrise to sunset. One must constantly tug on the fishing rods so that the fish can see the bait in the water. Incidentally, the depth here is 15 meters, and the fish stay on the very bottom, but it only takes a few seconds for a real fisherman to pull the catch up through the hole and not get tangled up in the long fishing line.

During the energy crisis, a unique sort of fish has appeared in Primorye.

-- В народе, а, в Приморье называют её "чубайс", не от того, что там он маленький, а того, что он рыженкий, похож на нашего Чубайса, ха-ха.

"The people, uh, in Primorye call it a 'Chubais,' not because it's small, but because it's reddish, similar to our Chubais, ha-ha." [Note: Anatoly Chubais is a redhead.]

Но далеко не всех сюда привела необъяснимая любовь крыбалке. Всё чаще рыбаками становятся пенсионеры, учителя, врачи, и даже дети. Выходить на лёд их заставляет нужда. Юрий высококлассный водитель с многолетним стажем, но работу найти не может.

But not everyone here has been gripped by an inexplicable love for fishing. Increasingly, pensioners, teachers, doctors and even children are becoming fishermen. Necessity forces them out onto the ice. Yurij is a highly qualified driver with a long record of service, but he can't find any work.

-- После сорока пяти лет вообще уже никуда даже не спрашивать-то. Никуда ты и не нужен. Вот приходи на лёд-то рыбачить. Порыбачи и вот на вокзал поехал рыбу продовать, если поимал. Вот 10 штук поимал - 50 рублей.

"After 45 years there isn't even anywhere to apply. You're not needed anywhere. So you go out onto the ice to fish. You fish for awhile and then go to the station and sell the fish, if I've caught any. If I catch 10 fish, that's 50 rubles."

Больше всего рыбаки боятся, что у них отберут и эту последнюю работу. Владивосток единственный в стране город, где нет очистных сооружений. Ежедневно он сбрасывает в море полмиллиона кубометров канализационных стоков, которые травят рыбу.

More than anything else, the fishermen fear that even this final 'means of employment' will be taken from them. Vladivostok is the only city in the country where there aren't any purification facilities. Every day it dumps a half-million cubic meters of sewage waste that poisons the fish.

-- Заводы стоят, отравляют воду. И рыбы, дохлые, ведь на речке - посмотрите, что творят, плывёт она, вся дохлая.

"The factories stand there and poison the water. And the dead fish - right on the river, look what they're doing, it's floating, completely dead."

Учённые Института биологии моря отмечают, что больной рыбы в прибрежных водах становится всё больше.

Scientists at the Marine Biology Institute note that there are more and more sick fish in the coastal waters.

-- В этой среде носятся и вирусы и микробы, различные, патогенного характера, поэтому здесь проявляется на, прежде всего тем, что проявляются кроме язвы ещё и опухоли, доброкачественные, недоброкачественные различного характера.

"Viruses and various microbes of a pathological nature are borne along in this environment, thus what develops here, mainly, what develops besides sores are benign tumors, malignant tumors, of various sorts."

Впрочем стоки, это лишь полбеды. Сокрушительный удар по морскому биоразнообразию наносит прибрежный лов.

By the way, drainage is only half the problem. The crushing blow to biological diversity is dealt by coastal fishing.

-- Она на нерест идёт, а её вылавливают. И притом дно, они укатали там дно. Там ни травы, ничего нет уже.

"She goes to spawn and they catch her. And besides this, there's the seabed, they've worn away the seabed. There's no grass, there's nothing there anymore."

Это один из примеров рыбной политики администрации Евгения Наздратенко, которому теперь доверили всё рыбное хозяйство страны.

"Everywhere, throughout the entire world there's such coastal harm,it borders on the criminal. And here you can do whatever you want. They went out at night, one after another, there's no fish for anyone."

Рыбаки говорят, что из-за такого промысла, морской город скоро останется без рыбы. Но пока ещё каждый вечер можно наблюдать удивительное зрелище, когда со льдов из паромов на берег сходят тысячи людей. Работники причалов называют их "пенгвинами" по своеобразной походке. Рыбаки идут, переваливаясь с ноги на ногу из-за тяжёлой одежды и груза за спиной. Многие сразу направляются на рынок продавать улов.

The fishermen say that as a result of such (over-) fishing, the maritime city will soon be without fish. Yet every night you can still view an amazing spectacle as thousands of people leave the ice and disembark from the ferries. The dock workers call them "penguins," because of their peculiar way of walking. The fishermen walk, waddling from one foot to the other because of the heavy clothing and the load on their backs. Many immediately head for the market to sell their catch.

-- Что такое пенсия, 800 рублей, да? [Ага.] А за квартиру отдай, и всё. 300 за квартиру и 500 на хлеб только. А больше что? Конечно они так не живут. [Ага.] По тому поймает, вот по 500 рублей продаст.

"What pension, 800 rubles, right? [Aha.] So you pay your rent and that's it. 300 for the rent and only 500 for food. And then what? Of course t hey don't live that way. [Aha.] Then one will catch a fish and sell it for 500 rubles."

Покупатели люди всех социальных групп. Даже дамы в норковых шубах предпочитают свежую рыбу с рынка замороженной магазинной. Мало обеспеченные пенсионеры тем более.

The buyers are people from every social class. Even ladies in mink coats prefer fresh fish over the frozen, store-bought variety. And low-income retirees all the more.

-- ... или возьмите, вот, на Дзержинской, там мороженную продают такую, страшную, а здесь вот свеженькая, 40 рублей.

"... or take, like there on Dzerzhinskij Street, they sell some sort of terrible frozen kind, but here, fresh, for 40 rubles."

Многие рыбаки сразу спешат домой, порадовать уловом семью. Пенсионер Эдуард Данкер сегодня доволен. В коробе 70 свежих рыб корюшек. Жена Валентина рада ещё больше.

Many fishermen immediately hurry home to please the family with the catch. Retiree Eduard Danker is pleased today. There are 70 fresh smelt in his basket. Wife Valentina is even happier.

-- Ну, улов есть.

"Well, we have a catch."

Начинают готовить ужин. В рецептах хозяйки больше десяти рыбных блюд. Муж Эдуард проводит на рыбалке два из трёх зимных месяцев. Этими живут.

They begin to make supper. The housewife recipes include more than 10 for fish. Husband Eduard spends two of the three winter months fishing. This is enough for them to live.

-- Это разве ни прибыль а ни приработок - конечно она, а, рыбку пожарит, котлетки сделает, там, второй и всё, это ясно - а как же мы выжи-, а, выжили бы вот на пенсию?!
