Всего несколько сот метров разделяет позиции федеральных войск и Дудаевских боевиков. Больше двух недель стоят они друг против друга, не предпринимая активных действий. У боевиков позиции предпочтительнее, они окопались уж самого входа ущелья Агишты. Плотная дымовая завеса -- горят 3000 тонн мазута -- надёжно укрывает их от посторонних глаз. Союзником боевиков стал и густой лес, покрывший окрестный город. Так, что на быстрое проведение операции рассчитывать не приходится. |

Оnly a few hundred meters separates the positions of federal troops and Dudaev's rebels. They have been in this face-off for more than two weeks, neither side taking any action. T he rebels command the better positions; they are entrenched at the very entrance to the Agishti pass. A thick smoke screen from 3,000 tons of burning oil covers them well from foreign eyes. The thick forest surrounding the city has also become an ally for the rebels. Therefore a quick end to this operation can't be counted on. |

Каким будет этот предстоящий бой? Предсказать не берёмся. Наверно нелёгким. Но командование федеральных войск будет делать всё, чтобы избежать потери. Вот и сегодня командующий Северо-кавказским военным округом, Генерал-Полковник Анатолий Квашнин, встречался и с солдатами федеральных войск и с жителями тех самых чеченских селений, которые предстоит отчистить от боевиков. |

No one can foretell what this forthcoming battle will be like. Most likely it will not be easy. But the command of the federal troops will do all that it can to avoid losses. Today the commander of the Northern Caucuses Military District, General-Colonel Anatoli Kvashnin, met not just with the federal troops, but also with the inhabitants of those Chechen villages, which are to be cleansed of rebels. |

Командующий пытался убедить жителей сдавать оружие, просил стариков в силе своего авторитета повлиять на молодёжь и заставить её остановить кров o пролитиe. Рано или поздно, боевикам всё равно придётся уйти и из Чири-Юрта и Шатоя, и из Сержен-Юрта, и других селений. Это, по мнению командующего, всего лишь вопрос времени. А пока войска готовятся к штурму, работает артиллерия и авиация. |

The commander tried to convince the inhabitants to give up their weapons. He asked the elders to use their authority to influence young people to stop the bloodshed. Sooner or later the rebels will have to leave Chiri-Yurt, Shatoy, Serzhen-Yurt, and other towns. In the opinion of the commander, this is just a matter of time. Meanwhile, troops are preparing to attack; artillery and air fire continue. |
