Тhe Argun River lies below. On the far bank is the village of Chiri-Yurt. And behind it, the smoke stacks and buildings of a cement factory can be easily seen. That is where a large group of rebels are concentrated. |

Троe суток командование федеральных войск уговаривало дудаевцев покинуть Чири-Юрт, не подвергать опасности мирных жителей. Уговоры не подействовали, наоборот -- боевики иcпользовали это время сполна. Подвезли оружиe, боеприпасы. Не смогли убедить дудаевцев и старейшены. И сегодня утром федеральные войска приступили к ликвидации незаконно вооружённой группировки. |

For three days the Federal troop command has been trying to pursuade Dudaev's supporters to leave Chiri-Yurt and not expose the civilian population to danger. Attempts to persuade them had no effect, just the opposite; the rebels took full advantage of this time. They brought in weapons and ammunition. Even the village elders could not persuade Dudaev's supporters to leave; and so this morning federal troops began to wipe out the illegally armed gang. |

For several hours the enemy positions were bombarded by air and ground artillery. Then a tank regiment opened fire. And only after that did a battalion from the 7th Infantry Division enter the conflict. |

By day's end, a unit of the battalion had surrounded enemy positions and fortified the northern flank, while a reconnaissance regiment had blocked off the factory from the opposite direction. |
