Сегодня войска снова в чеченской столице, но изменилась одна важная деталь: генералы больше не обещают брать позиции бандформирований к определённой дате и стараются не на словах беречь жизни солдат.

Today the troops are in the Chechen capital again, but one important detail has changed: the generals no longer promise to take rebel positions by a certain date and are actually trying, not just saying they are, to spare soldiers' lives.

К новому году военнослужащие получили нехитрые подарки. Некоторые из них, вполне естественные для мирной жизни, в Чечне выглядят пло-, просто нелепо. Кто-то додумался отправить на передовую хлопушки.

For New Year's, the troops received some odd presents. Some of them, perfectly normal in civilian life, seem som-, simply absurd in Chechnya. Someone came up with the idea of sending fireworks to the front.

В Чечню непрерывно идут войсковые колонны не только с горючим и боеприпасами. В последние дни самый популярный среди военных груз-новогодние подарки - письма, ёлки, игрушки - а удивление: много хлопушек. Но эти судари недоумевают. Взрывов и фейерверков здесь им, стало, хватает. Больше всего они радуются вяленой рыбе.

Military convoys arrive continuously in Chechnya with more than just fuel and ammunition. The most popular military cargo these days are New Year's presents - letters, Christmas trees, toys - and a surprise: a lot of fireworks. But these gentlemen are bewildered. There are enough explosions and fireworks for them here. More than anything else, they're happy with the smoked fish.

"Sakhalin smelt ... with Georgian beer."

Подарки от Деда Мороза получили здесь увы не все. То ли как всегда у нас на всех не хватило, то ли потому что их не просто доставить на передовую. Единственное, чем мы смогли порадовать солдат, передать поздравления родным и близким.

Alas, not everyone here received a present from Santa Claus. Either, as is always the case with us, there weren't enough for everyone, or because it's not easy to transport them to the front. The one thing we were able to do to make the soldiers happy was to broadcast greetings to their families and friends.

-- Мой папа каждый вечер смотрит ОРТ, поэтому я надеюсь в этот вечер он тоже будет смотреть новости, и я хотел передать привет в Оренбургскую область, Матвеевский район, посёлок Тюнильский. Папа, мама, у меня всё нормально. Поздравляю вас с новым годом. Держитесь там.

"My dad watches ORT every evening, so I hope he'll watch the news tonight too, and I wanted to say hello to the Orenburg Oblast, Matveevskij Rajon, the village of Tyunilskij. Dad, Mom, I'm fine. I wish you a Happy New Year. Hang in there."

-- Ма, всё хорошо, не волнуйтесь. С Новым Годом.

"Mom, everything's fine, don't worry. Happy New Year."

-- Ну, хочу поздравить (B% своих) родителей с Новым Годом, и всех, кто меня знает, то исполнится ( XM ).

"Well, I want to wish my parents a Happy New Year, and everyone who knows me, that (XM) is being done."

Найти в Чечне ёлку намного легче, чем подобрать к ней игрушки. Украшать её пулемётными лентами, патронами и гранатами не разрешили командиры - говорят опасно. Можно, конечно, конфетами, но это не надолго - бойцам хочется сладенького.

But it's much easier to find a Christmas tree in Chechnya, than to hang some ornaments on it. The commanders have forbidden decorating it with cartridge belts, cartridges and grenades - they say it's dangerous. It can, of course, be decorated with candy, but not for long - the troops like sweets.

Повара уже с утра начали колдовать над праздничным ужином, чтобы кулинарные мечты солдат сбылись.

The cooks already began conjuring up the holiday meal early this morning, so that the culinary dreams of the troops will come true.

-- Новогодняя ночь на праздничный ужин будет праздничная сечка и гречка.

"We'll have the holiday chaff and buckwheat [traditional] for the festive dinner on New Year's Eve."

-- А чем праздничная сечка отличается от обычной?

"And what differentiates the holiday meal from the usual one?"

-- Ну, мы просто добавим туда ещё тушёнку и соль. Ха-ха, на самом деле, конечно, раздадим ребятам и печения, сыр и банку сгущёнки на двоих, хотя положено на десятерых.

"Well, we simply add in some canned meat and salt. Ha-ha, seriously, of course, we serve the guys some baked goods, cheese and a bottle of condensed milk for two to share, although it's supposed to be for ten."

В новогоднюю ночь военные не обошли вниманием и боевиков. Подарок им подготовили артиллеристы. Накануне праздника бандиты обстреляли одно из их подразделений, а все рассказали, что надо успеть вернуть долги в уходящем году.

On New Year's Eve, the soldiers didn't forget the rebels. The gunners prepared a present for them. The day before the holiday, the rebels fired on one of their units, and everyone said that they needed to repay the debt in full [return the favor] by the end of the year.

-- Так, подобно десять часов выстрел.

"Okay, just like 10:00 fire."

-- ... Есть!

"... Roger "

-- Шамиль Басаев ... с новым годом!

"Shamil Basayev ... Happy New Year!"

-- Я хочу поздравить всех со вторым тысячелетием, прежде всего военнослужащих, и пожелать, чтобы следующий новый год они встречали не в этих условиях, а дома с семьёй, как положено.

"I want to wish everyone a happy second millennium, especially the servicemen, and hope that they'll celebrate the next New Year's Eve, not under these conditions, but at home with the family, as it should be."

В полночь принято загадывать желания. Каждый военный мечтает о своём, и все вместе об одном: добить боевиков и встретить следующий новый год только фейерверком.

At midnight, it's customary to make a wish. Each soldier has his own dream, and they all share a common one: to defeat the rebels and celebrate the next New Year's Eve with just fireworks.
