В Чечне в последние сутки боевики совершили серию диверсий на объектах системы газораспределения. Сначала они сорвали газопровод, снабжающий топливом гудермеский район республики. В результате, перед праздником и без газа и отопления остался весь Гудермес, где сейчас находится временная администрация Чечни. Затем взрыв прогремел на газораспределительной станции уже в Грозном.

In the last few days in Chechnya, the rebels have carried out several acts of sabotage on sections of the (natural) gas 'pipeline' [lit. distribution system]. First they cut the gas pipel ine supplying the Gudermes region with fuel. As a result, before the holiday, all of Gudermes, where the provisional administration of Chechnya is now located, was without gas and heating. Then an explosion rocked the (natural) gas distribution plant in Grozny itself.

Это означает, что весь частный сектор чеченской столицы, отапливаемый исключительно газом, рискует замёрзнуть, поскольку всё деревянное сожгли ещё прошлой зимой.

This means that the entire private sector of the Chechen capital, heated exclusively by gas, risks freezing, since everything wooden was already burned last winter.

Возможно в ситуацию придётся вмешаться отрядам МЧС. Вместе с очередной группой спасателей, в Грозном побывала Ольга Лежень.

Ministry of Emergency Situations teams will probably have to intervene in the situation. Olga Lezhen visited with the latest group of aid workers.

В Грозном сейчас, меньше чем за неделю до нового года, ехать нужно быстро, говорит вам водитель, которого вы упросили провести вас по городу. Правда у свежо выстроенного здания представительства здесь РАО ЕЭС России, этот водитель сам сбавляет скорость.

In Grozny now, less than a week before the new year, one has to drive quickly, the driver you asked to take you around the city tells you. Still, at a newly constructed building, Russia's Unified Energy System representation here, this driver himself reduces his speed.

Это самый заметный сейчас в городе дом, первая за Бог весть сколько лет в Грозном новостройка, обещающая свет, тепло и рабочие места грозненцам.

This is currently the most visible dwelling in the city, the first new building in Grozny promising the city's residents light, heat and jobs, in God knows how long.

Сколько всего сейчас людей живёт в Грозном точно вам не скажут даже в здешней мэрии, но вы останавливаете машину на ближайшей улице, и видите жизнь здесь в каждом дворе. Анзор - ему 19 лет - живёт рядом с берегом Сунжы на улице Киевской. Этот новый год он встретит в Грозном дома. Сейчас у Анзора вынужденные каникулы. Он студент Чеченского государственного педагогического института, будущий историк.

Even the city administration here cannot tell you exactly how many people in all currently reside in Grozny, but as you stop the car at the nearest street, you see life here in every yard. Nineteen-year-old Anzor lives along the bank of the Sunzha on Kievskij Street. He'll celebrate New Year's at home in Grozny. Anzor is on compulsory vacation. He's a student at the Chechen State Pedagogical Institute, a future historian.

В свои каникулярные дни Анзор намерен помогать сестре в магазине. Многие грозненские уличные торговцы к зиме перебрались в такие вот помещения. И шампанского здесь пока не видно.

Anzor plans to spend his vacation days helping his sister at a store. Many Grozny street vendors have moved for the winter into enclosures like this. And there's no champagne visible here yet.

К тому же говорит Анзор, он сам вызывался пока не учиться присматривать за газовыми факелами во дворе. Такой факел на стене кирпичного дома в Грозном, уличный фонарь.

In addition to this, Anzor says while he's not studying, he volunteered to look after the gas 'lights' in the yard. This flame on the wall of a brick home in Grozny, is a street light.

Живущие сейчас в Грозном такие фонари делают сами; режут газовые трубы, и днём этот факел как костёр из трубы, ночью это свет. В новогоднюю ночь из всех возможных мирных огней, в Грозном будут гореть скорее всего только эти.

Those now living in Grozny make torches like this themselves; they cut the gas pipes, and by day this flame acts as a 'piped-in camp fire,' by night it's a lamp. On New Year's Eve, of all the peaceful fires conceivable in Grozny, probably only these will be burning.

Мовлади, сосед Анзора по двору, говорит, что единственную действующую в Грозном сейчас коммуникационную систему газ, грозненцы уже научились использовать в их домах. На газу в его доме работает не только плита, ещё и самодельные обогревательные приборы и такой же самодельный светильник.

Movladi, Anzor's neighbor across the courtyard, says that the residents of Grozny have already learned how to use Grozny's only working gas supply line in their homes. It's not just the stove in his home that operates on gas, but also some homemade heating devices and this homemade lamp.

Единственная новогодняя ёлка в Грозном стоит сейчас меньше чем в километре от Киевской улицы, на проспекте Революции, и рядом с мэрией города. На ней нет привычных новогодних игрушек. Но грозненцы говорят, что ближе к 31-ому декабря, игрушки здесь появятся. Может быть.

The only Christmas tree in Grozny now stands less than a kilometer from Kievskij Street, on Revolution Avenue, and next to the city hall. There aren't any of the usual New Year's toys hanging on it. But the residents of Grozny say that closer to December 31st, the toys will appear here. Perhaps.
